The healing touch of sensual massage is treated as a crime in most parts of the United States. It is generally recognized as legal for a massage therapist to touch and rub any part of a person's body except their genitals. This is true even when there is mutual consent.

Sensual massage releases sexual tension and provides emotional and physical well being to those fortunate enough to experience it. What goes on behind the closed doors of massage businesses should be of absolutely no concern to the government.

Questions and Answers

What is sensual massage?

Sensual massage is the rubbing of a person's body to relieve muscle tension and stress, and to provide a sexual release. It is very similar to therapeutic massage, except that the genitals are rubbed along with other parts of the body. Therapeutic massage does not generally involve touching the genitals.

Isn't sensual massage really just another form of prostitution?

Not really. Prostitution usually involves vaginal, anal, and/or oral sex, whereas sensual massage involves touching or masturbating the genitals using only the hands or perhaps other parts of the body. There is no mouth-to-genital or genital-to-genital contact. If such contact does occur, however, then we are no longer just talking about sensual massage.

Can you catch diseases from giving or receiving a sensual massage?

It is very rare to catch a disease from giving or receiving a sensual massage, but it can happen. A form of herpes common among some healthcare workers called herpetic whitlow is perhaps the most likely risk, which can result in herpes cold sores appearing on the fingers. Infection can occur in the therapist if infected semen or vaginal fluids from a client enter the body through a cut or abrasion on the hands. In even rarer cases, herpetic whitlow can also result in herpes transmission to a client, with female clients having a somewhat higher risk of infection than men. Herpetic whitlow and other transmissible diseases contracted through massage are very uncommon, however, and in any case can be prevented by using a latex condom (for penile stimulation of male clients) or latex gloves (for clitoral stimulation of female clients).

Why is sensual massage criminalized in so many places?

Like laws that criminalize prostitution, laws regulating sensual massage are designed to enforce outdated morality codes. They have no place in a free society.

What needs to be done?

Either Congress must pass a human rights law decriminalizing sensual massage, or the Supreme Court needs to issue a ruling declaring that laws banning sensual massage are unconstitutional because they violate a person's right to privacy.
