In a democracy, people can make a difference. The sexual
repression that is part of the American legal and political
system will not go away until we make it go away by
raising our voices.
The words of intolerance, religious extremism, and bigotry must
be overcome by voices of compassion, understanding, and reason.
When you see your local, state, and national leaders doing
things that contribute to sexual repression, take the time
to voice your opposition by writing them letters, calling their
offices, and e-mailing their staff. Do the same when you see or
hear unbalanced news stories regarding sexual freedom, and when
you hear about police operations and raids that target sexually
oriented businesses or activities.
If you are arrested or ticketed for a "crime" of sexual
expression, sue the government body that criminalized your
behavior. The courts are perhaps the best chance we have of
protecting our sexual freedom, as evidenced by the recent
Supreme Court decision striking down homosexual sodomy laws in
Texas.
Don't be afraid to stand up for your rights. Because if you
don't, maybe no one else will either.
